With a population of around 500,000 people, it is the largest city in Upper Egypt and the administrative capital of the Governorate of Al-Uqsur.
The Nile divides the city into two parts. In the northeast of Luxor, you find the famous Karnak temple, which was the most important temple in ancient Egypt.
Its huge columns, obelisks, and statues impress with their size. Further south is the Luxor Museum, followed by the Luxor Temple.
The Luxor Museum is home to recent finds from the area. The Luxor temple was built by Amenophis and Ramses and dedicated to Amun Ra, the king of the gods.
On the other side of the Nile, the temple of the famous Queen Hatshepsut is located, which stems from the 18th Dynasty and is considered the best-preserved temple in Thebes. It belongs to Deir El-Beheri, which is on the west bank of the Nile.
Not far from the Valley of the Kings, where Howard Carter found the almost intact tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, is the impressive Colossi of Memnon located, which embody King Amenophis III.
